I see Cain did what he wanted to do. He offered God fruits and vegetables. Most of us are like that. And Abel did what God wanted him to do. He offered a lamb. Our natural instinct is that to be happy we should do what we want. But this passage of scripture shows that God knows best. So, we have to choose whom we’re going to follow: God or our own will. Satan wants us to follow our own will.
Hi Ann â I really appreciate your clarity here. I hear you: Cain acts from âwhat I want,â Abel acts from âwhat God wants.â For me, thatâs the heart of this passage tooâbut I also see a tender invitation inside it.
God doesnât slam the door on Cain; He meets him and says, âIf you do well, wonât you be lifted? And if not, sin is crouching at the door.â In other words, my will isnât the enemyâmy unoffered will is. When I place my desire on the altar, itâs shaped, blessed, and aligned. Thatâs the shift from âmy wayâ to âThy way,â which is what Abel models.
Practically, I try to do three small things when I feel that Cain-energy rise in me:
Pause and name the feeling (throat chakra honesty): âI want ___, and I feel ___.â
Ask: âIs this desire surrendered or self-driven?â If itâs mine alone, I offer it back to God in prayer.
Make a micro-obedience: one concrete step that honors what God is asking now.
